Safer Internet Day 2026: Smart Tech, Safe Choices in the Age of AI

Safer Internet Day 2026, held on 10 February 2026, focuses on the timely theme “Smart tech, safe choices - Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.” This theme reflects the growing presence of artificial intelligence in young people’s lives and highlights the essential role the teachers play in guiding their students toward informed and ethical digital behaviour.

As tools such as chatbots, voice assistants, and AI-powered platforms become increasingly common in education and everyday life, our students need support to understand both their benefits and their risks. Safer Internet Day 2026 encourages educators to help learners develop critical thinking skills, particularly when engaging with AI-generated content. The students should be able to question accuracy, recognize potential bias, and understand that AI outputs are shaped by data and design choices.

Key focus areas this year include privacy protection, responsible data sharing, and awareness of how AI systems collect and use information. The teachers can use classroom discussions and practical activities to explore ethical issues, such as fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI-driven technologies. These conversations help students become not just users of technology, but thoughtful and responsible digital citizens.

Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the Safer Internet Day initiative emphasizes empowering children and young people to use AI safely and confidently. Globally, Safer Internet Day continues to promote the message “Together for a better internet,” with activities and events taking place throughout February 2026.

For teachers, Safer Internet Day 2026 is an opportunity to integrate AI literacy into everyday teaching and to reinforce that smart technology must always be matched with safe, ethical choices.

On 30 January 2026, the second online meeting of the eTwinning project A Song for Our Souls in an English-Speaking World brought together teachers and students from three high schools in Poland and Romania: Pijarskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące Królowej Pokoju w Łowiczu, Liceul Teoretic "Nicolae Iorga" Nehoiu, and Liceul Teoretic "Radu Vlădescu" Pătârlagele. Coordinated by Mrs. Emilia Wolska, Mrs. Maria Pană, Mrs. Claudia Emilia Frînculeasă, and Mrs. Adelaida Loredana Iorga, the meeting focused on sharing pedagogical experiences related to using national songs as educational resources.

The participants discussed about the selection process of the most representative national songs, considering criteria such as cultural significance, historical context, and emotional impact. This process encouraged research, critical thinking, and meaningful communication in English. The teachers and students also exchanged their best practices regarding classroom activities inspired by the songs, including lyric analysis, creative writing, visual interpretation, and interdisciplinary projects combining language learning with history, literature, philosophy, and art.

A central theme of the meeting was the cultural and personal values conveyed through music. The three songs served as a starting point for discussions on identity, hope, resilience, well-being, and empathy, highlighting the importance of affective learning. Overall, the meeting showcased the benefits of international collaboration, pedagogical innovation, and interdisciplinary education, while supporting the development of key competences and students’ personal growth.

NOVA- Cum transformăm experiențele de învățare. Gânduri ale voluntarilor și participanților.

Cum ar fi dacă învățarea ar deveni o aventură?
Dacă lectura, știința, arta și imaginația s-ar întâlni într-o singură experiență educațională?
Proiectul „NOVA.

Interdisciplinarity vs. Transdisciplinarity

As education increasingly focuses on real-world relevance and transferable skills, the teachers often encounter the terms interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. While closely related, these approaches differ in purpose, structure, and classroom practice and understanding their distinctions helps educators design more effective learning experiences.

Interdisciplinarity involves the intentional integration of two or more academic disciplines to enhance the understanding of a shared theme, question, or problem. In this approach, disciplinary boundaries remain visible, but connections are emphasized. For example, a unit combining history and literature to study a historical period allows the students to apply methods and perspectives from each field while still working within established curricula. The primary goal of interdisciplinarity is deeper academic understanding and the transfer of knowledge across subjects. Assessment typically focuses on subject-specific outcomes, even when learning activities are shared.

Transdisciplinarity, by contrast, moves beyond disciplinary frameworks altogether. Learning is organized around complex, real-world problems, such as social inequality or cultural preservation, that cannot be adequately addressed by any single discipline. In transdisciplinary learning, academic knowledge is combined with practical expertise, community input, and lived experience. Disciplines serve as resources rather than structures, and the students often collaborate with external stakeholders. The emphasis shifts from content mastery to problem-solving, innovation, and social impact.

Another key difference lies in teacher and student roles. Interdisciplinary teaching is usually teacher-designed and curriculum-driven, with educators coordinating content across subjects. Transdisciplinary learning is more student-centered and inquiry-driven, requiring learners to define problems, select relevant knowledge, and reflect on ethical and societal implications.

In summary, interdisciplinarity connects disciplines to enrich learning, while transdisciplinarity transcends them to address authentic challenges. Both approaches are valuable, but transdisciplinarity demands greater flexibility, collaboration, and openness to the world beyond the classroom, three qualities which are becoming increasingly essential in contemporary education.

Transdisciplinary Activities for Humanities Students

Transdisciplinary learning goes beyond combining academic disciplines by integrating real-world problems, societal needs, and stakeholder perspectives into the learning process. For the Romanian humanities students, transdisciplinary activities are particularly valuable, as they connect cultural heritage, social realities, and global challenges while developing transferable 21st-century competencies.

One effective transdisciplinary activity is community-based cultural projects. The students collaborate with local museums, libraries, NGOs, or municipal institutions to document oral histories, preserve minority cultures, or promote intangible heritage. These projects merge history, linguistics, anthropology, civic engagement, and digital media, while fostering collaboration, ethical awareness, and social responsibility.

Policy and social innovation labs represent another impactful approach. In these activities, the students address issues such as education reform, digital inclusion, or rural development by drawing on philosophy, sociology, law, economics, and public administration. Working alongside community partners and experts encourages problem-solving, negotiation skills, and evidence-based decision-making.

Digital storytelling for social impact allows students to combine literature, media studies, technology, and activism. By creating podcasts, short films, or interactive websites focused on social justice, environmental sustainability, or historical memory in Romania, the students develop creativity, digital literacy, and persuasive communication skills.

Living labs and urban studies projects are also highly relevant. The students analyze public spaces, cultural infrastructure, or heritage conservation challenges in Romanian cities, integrating urban studies, history, ethics, and environmental studies. These activities strengthen systems thinking and contextual analysis.

Finally, intercultural and European collaboration projects enable the students to work with peers from other countries on shared societal challenges. Such initiatives align well with Romania’s European context and help develop intercultural competence, adaptability, and global citizenship.

Through transdisciplinary activities, the Romanian humanities students move from theoretical knowledge to meaningful action, becoming reflective professionals capable of addressing complex societal challenges in a rapidly changing world.

Types of Interdisciplinary Activities for Humanities Students That Build 21st-Century Skills

Humanities students benefit most from learning experiences that cross disciplinary boundaries as interdisciplinary activities both deepen subject understanding and cultivate essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, digital literacy, and problem-solving. Here are several effective approaches that we, the educators, can integrate into the humanities curricula.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is one of the most impactful strategies. Projects that combine history, literature, sociology, and data analysis encourage analytical reasoning, teamwork, and communication.

Digital Humanities Projects bridge the humanities with technology. Activities like creating interactive timelines, mapping historical events, or analyzing texts with basic coding introduce students to digital literacy while reinforcing interpretive and research skills.

Collaborative Case Studies that integrate ethics, economics, and cultural studies help students examine real-world issues from multiple perspectives.

Creative-Maker Assignments blend the humanities with design and media studies. Producing podcasts, short documentaries, or digital exhibits based on historical or literary themes fosters creativity, storytelling, and technical proficiency.

Debates and Simulations that draw on literature, history, and communication studies develop persuasion, leadership, and collaboration under realistic constraints.

By embedding interdisciplinary activities into humanities education, we equip our students with adaptable skills that extend well beyond the classroom. These experiences prepare them to engage diverse perspectives, and contribute meaningfully in professional and civic contexts which are hallmarks of success in the 21st century.
