Celebrating the European Day of Languages in Our Classroom Every year on September 26th, we celebrate the European Day of Languages, a special opportunity to explore the rich diversity of languages spoken across Europe. This year, I wanted to make the day interactive, fun, and educational for my students, and I’m happy to share some of the activities we enjoyed together! 🎮 Wordwall Games To get the students warmed up, we started with some Wordwall games. These interactive quizzes and vocabulary challenges helped them connect flags to countries and match common greetings to the correct languages. They absolutely loved the competitive element and seeing their scores climb! 💻 ISLCollective Resources We used worksheets and short activities from ISLCollective, which offered a great variety of level-appropriate materials. These helped the students practice listening and reading skills while learning about different languages and European cultures. 🎧 YouTube: “Guess the Language” Next up, we watched a "Guess the Language" video on YouTube. This was a big hit! The students listened to short audio clips of people speaking different European languages and had to guess which language it was. Some of them were surprisingly good at picking out familiar words and accents! 🧩 Hello Wordsearch Group Activity One of the highlights of the day was a group wordsearch activity. Each team had to find how to say “Hello” in various European languages. Once they found the words, we looked at where the languages came from and how greetings vary across cultures. It sparked lots of curiosity and even a few attempts at pronouncing new greetings—some more successful than others! 🌍 What We Learned More than anything, this celebration reminded us how beautifully diverse Europe is. Language is more than just a tool—it’s a reflection of culture, identity, and connection. The students left with a deeper appreciation for the languages around them and a few new ways to say “hello” to the world.
